YCN Proficiency Points Rules

1.1.1 CLASSIFICATION PROFICIENCY POINTS are awarded to YCN Athletes as follows:

If there is only a final round, no points are awarded.

If there is a semifinal round:
  • In the level he or she is dancing, a competitor receives...
    • 1st place: 3 points
    • 2nd place: 2 points
    • 3rd place: 1 point
  • The points filter down into the level below the one in which the competitor has just received points, like so:
    • 1st place: 6 points
    • 2nd place: 4 points
    • 3rd place: 2 points
  • In all levels below that, the competitor earns 7 points across the board (if they received 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) and can no longer compete at that level or any other level below that.
If there is a quarterfinal round:
  • In the level he or she is dancing, a competitor receives...
    • 1st place: 3 points
    • 2nd place: 2 points
    • 3rd - 6th place: 1 point
  • The points again filter down into the level below the one in which the competitor has just received points, like so:
    • 1st place: 6 points
    • 2nd place: 4 points
    • 3rd - 6th place: 2 points
  • In all levels below that, the competitor earns 7 points across the board (if they earned anything 1st - 6th place) and can no longer compete at that level or any of the levels below that.

1.1.2 A RECOGNIZED YCN COMPETITION is a competition that has received an official sanction from YCN.

1.1.3 PROFICIENCY CLASSIFICATIONS

1.1.3.1 There are seven general YCN competitive classifications for each age group and style that relate to proficiency. They are, from highest to lowest:
  1. Championship
  2. Pre-Championship
  3. Master of Syllabus
  4. Novice
  5. Gold Syllabus
  6. Silver Syllabus
  7. Bronze Syllabus
Notes:
  • Points earned at the championship level will filter down through pre-champ level, the novice level, the gold level, the silver level, and bronze level.
  • Points earned at the pre-champ level will filter down through the novice level, the gold level, the silver level, and bronze level.
  • Points earned at the novice level will no way affect any other level.
  • Points earned at the master of syllabus level will affect the points in gold, silver, and bronze.
  • Points earned at the gold level will filter down to the silver and bronze levels.
  • Points earned at the silver level will filter down through to the bronze level.
  • Novice points can never affect your eligibility at the syllabus level.
  • Competitors can never be placed out of championship or master of syllabus.

1.1.3.2 Amateur Athletes may only compete in a particular proficiency classification or sub-classification in a particular style and age group until they have acquired seven (7) proficiency points in that classification or sub-classification, or in a higher classification or sub-classification.

1.1.3.3 Amateur Athletes acquiring seven proficiency points in a particular style and age group shall no longer be eligible to compete in that classification for that style and age group, except that there is no limit to the number of proficiency points which may be acquired in the Championship or Master of Syllabus classification.

1.1.3.4 In the Syllabus Categories, Proficiency Points are accumulated independently for each dance since one-dance events are allowed. It is therefore possible to be at a Gold level in one dance and at a Bronze level in a different dance. Competitors wishing to enter in a Syllabus event consisting of 2 or more dances which are judged as one event must be eligible to compete at the given level for ALL of the dances involved.

For example, consider a competitor who is ineligible to dance at the Bronze Syllabus level in International Waltz due to his or her placement in past one-dance or multi-dance competitions, but who is eligible to dance at the Bronze Syllabus level in International Quickstep. That competitor would be ineligible to compete in a 2-dance Bronze Syllabus Waltz / Quickstep event.

1.1.3.5 An Amateur Athlete may petition to be reinstated to a lower classification on grounds of loss of proficiency. This petition shall be sent to the USABDA executive secretary who will forward it to the YCN Rules committee.

1.1.3.6 Proficiency Points earned by YCN Amateur Athletes are applied to the Proficiency Points Systems in the following manner:

  1. Any point(s) earned at an USABDA (USA DanceSport) Recognized Event or NDCA Recognized Event apply also, point by point, to the YCN Proficiency Point System. (i.e. 1 proficiency point earned in silver from an USABDA (USA DanceSport) Recognized Event or NDCA Recognized Event adds 1 proficiency point to your silver YCN proficiency point classification.)
  2. Any point(s) earned at a recognized YCN competition do not apply to the USA DanceSport Proficiency Points System.
